Nomad Tools

Nomad Tools

A planning suite for early retirees and long-term nomads, with free manual planning tools and paid-tier features now in beta testing.

Nomad Tools is a web application designed to handle the practical logistics that come up when you’re living internationally on a retirement income. It’s not a travel booking app — it’s focused on the financial, legal, and planning questions that actually matter for long-term location independence.

This page covers the highlights. For the full breakdown — every tool, what it connects to, and what’s on the roadmap — see the complete feature guide.

What’s Included

FEIE Tracker — Foreign Earned Income Exclusion

The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion lets qualifying U.S. expats exclude a significant portion of foreign-earned income from federal income tax — over $120,000 as of recent years. But qualifying requires meeting the Physical Presence Test (330 days outside the U.S. in a 12-month period) or the Bona Fide Residence Test. The FEIE tracker helps you monitor your day counts, project whether you’ll qualify in a given period, and plan travel accordingly to protect your eligibility.

Prescription Drug Legality Checker

A medication that’s completely routine in the U.S. may be a controlled substance, require a local prescription, or be outright prohibited in another country. This tool lets you check the legal status of common prescription medications by country — so you’re not caught off guard at a border or running low somewhere with no good options. This is a practical reference tool, not medical advice; always confirm with local authorities for anything you’re uncertain about.

Schengen Calculator

Most non-EU passport holders are limited to 90 days in the Schengen Area within any 180-day rolling window. The rule is simple in concept and surprisingly easy to miscalculate in practice, because the window rolls continuously rather than resetting on a fixed date. The Schengen calculator tracks your entry and exit dates, shows your current day count, and tells you when you can next enter — and for how long. It handles the per-person tracking that matters when you and a travel partner have different travel histories.

Housing and Coliving Planner

Planning housing across multiple countries and time periods involves a lot of moving pieces — comparing costs, lease lengths, coliving options versus short-term rentals versus medium-term furnished apartments. The housing planner helps you map out stays across locations, estimate costs, and think through the tradeoffs of different accommodation strategies for a nomadic lifestyle.

Trip Advisor / Freeform Planning Tool

A flexible planning tool for thinking through upcoming trips — not a booking engine, but a scratchpad-style planner for mapping out country sequences, estimating time in each location, flagging visa requirements (backed by live per-passport visa data), and thinking through logistics before you commit to a route. Each destination brief now also folds in the practical living details — power, climate, and language basics. Useful both for big-picture annual planning and for working out the details of a specific trip.

Long-Stay Base Evaluator

Deciding where to put down roots? A weighted scorecard compares candidate countries on the factors that actually decide it — visa path, tax regime, cost of living, healthcare, internet, safety, flight connections, and climate — with weights you control and scores you can AI-seed and then fine-tune by hand.

Money Dashboard, Bank Sync, and Statement Intake

The money side brings together trip budgets, subscriptions, cards, retirement accounts, tax planning, and spending guardrails. You can enter everything by hand on the Free tier, upload statements for AI extraction, forward receipts by email, or use paid-tier Plaid bank and brokerage sync once billing is switched on. Account caps are household-wide and count individual accounts, so a single institution with checking, savings, and brokerage accounts counts as three.

Document, Vaccine, and Insurance Scanning

The vault stores passports, IDs, insurance policies, and vaccine records. AI scans can turn an insurance contract, vaccine card, or statement into structured records for review, saving the typing without hiding the source document.

Offline Access for Paid Plans

Nomad Tools is a PWA. Paid tiers can opt in to cache read-only household pages on a device, so border, trip, health, and planning information remains available on planes, at borders, and anywhere the signal disappears. Vault, admin, settings, API, and public share pages are never cached.

Who It’s For

  • U.S. citizens living abroad or planning to, who want to understand and track FEIE eligibility
  • Long-term travelers and expats who need to stay on top of Schengen limits
  • Anyone managing prescription medications internationally
  • Early retirees and nomads planning housing across multiple countries
  • Anyone weighing where to settle long-term — comparing candidate base countries head to head

Cost and Access

The pricing model is set: the core planning tools stay free with manual data entry. Paid tiers add AI features, automatic bank & brokerage sync, and offline access. Self-serve billing is not turned on yet during invite-only beta, but the app’s Free, BYOK, Plus, and Pro feature gates are already wired for testing. See plans & pricing.
